Why high CRI value is important:
The scientists around Arthur Krigel studied the effect of different types of light on the eyes of rats. At a light intensity equivalent to that in a normal dwelling, the animals' retina was damaged only by cold-white LED bulbs, not by light bulbs or fluorescent tubes.
For their study, the researchers used normally pigmented rats and albino rats. All experimental animals were first exposed for 24 hours to the very high light intensity of 6000 lux from the various light sources (LED lamps, light bulbs and cold cathode lamps (fluorescent tubes)). Irrespective of the type of light, this led to retinal inflammation and, as a consequence, to apoptosis (programmed cell death) of retinal cells. At a lower light intensity (500 lux), which the animals were exposed to for a week or a month in a normal day-night rhythm, on the other hand, only LED lamps set these processes in motion. The damage was more pronounced in albinos, but also present in the normally pigmented animals.
Their results show that the repeated exposure of white light from LED bulbs damages the eyes even at normal light levels, the authors said.
